Kiewit Corporation Establishes the Kiewit Scholars at Iowa State University

AMES, Iowa – Kiewit Corporation based in Omaha, Nebraska, has provided a gift commitment to establish the Kiewit Scholars at Iowa State. The program will support students in the Iowa State University College of Engineering who have an interest in and passion for the construction industry.

“Kiewit’s investment in Iowa State will not only help provide access to a quality educational experience but also will allow students to focus fully on their academic performance and leadership development,” said W. Samuel Easterling, the James L. and Katherine S. Melsa Dean of Engineering at Iowa State University. “We are sincerely gratefully for Kiewit’s vision and partnership in providing meaningful, empowering experiences for our Iowa State engineering students.”

This gift will create Kiewit Scholars at Iowa State, which will include both scholarship support and annual programming. The programming will focus on strengthening leadership, team building and professionalism – the pillars of Kiewit Scholars at Iowa State. Each pillar augments the communication, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills already developed through the existing curriculum within the college. Performance guidelines will be developed in each programming area to ensure Kiewit Scholars have acquired the competencies to become top engineers and leaders the industry needs to solve the global problems of today and tomorrow.

An initial 20 to 25 scholarship recipients will be selected in the first year, with additional awardees in subsequent years to create a full program supporting approximately 50 students by the third year.

Robin O’Callaghan, senior vice president of Kiewit Industrial Group and a 2001 graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering said, “Kiewit is proud of our long relationship with Iowa State. Iowa State graduates have had a significant positive impact on our company over the years. Developing Kiewit Scholars at Iowa State reinforces our commitment with ISU and will help build the next generation of Kiewit leaders.”

Kiewit Corporation made its gift through the Iowa State University Foundation, which is a private, nonprofit organization committed to securing and managing gifts that benefit Iowa State University.
