New Endowed Chair in the Iowa State University College of Engineering

Donna and Gary Hoover

Gary and Donna Hoover of Scottsdale, Ariz., have pledged more than $1.5 million to create the first endowed chair in the department of mechanical engineering at the Iowa State University College of Engineering.

“Endowed chairs are the most esteemed positions in academia and they are awarded only to the top tier of faculty,” said Mark J. Kushner, dean of the College of Engineering. “When this position is filled, he or she will command considerable prestige within the university and the larger professional field of mechanical engineering. In addition to bringing honor to the chair-holder, endowed positions also help attract the most talented students and provide an educational experience that transcends the classroom.”

A native of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Gary Hoover graduated from Iowa State in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Gary worked at Westinghouse for 20 years and later was a principal in the formation of a new business in Omaha to build, own and operate power plants. The Hoovers are longtime supporters of Iowa State because they enjoy making a difference in the lives of students. “It means a lot to us to be able to give back to Iowa State so we can help the students who will be our future leaders,” said Gary and Donna. “We know the College of Engineering will use this newly created position to make an impact in the lives of many.”

In addition to the $1.5 million commitment required to create this faculty position, the Hoovers are funding the chair on an annual basis until the endowment is fully funded. This gifting method enables the College of Engineering to fill the position more quickly.

“This extraordinary gift will extend far beyond our ability to recruit and retain outstanding faculty. Because of the Hoovers' tremendous dedication to Iowa State, for many generations to come, our students will benefit by being able to work with and learn from world-class researchers, educators, and academic leaders,” said Jonathan Wickert, department chair in mechanical engineering.

This commitment from Donna and Gary Hoover is part of Campaign Iowa State: With Pride and Purpose, the university’s $800 million fundraising effort that was publicly launched in October.
